Umami Luring: A Neo-Retro Hotpot Restaurant in Kaohsiung

Transforming Classical Elements with Modern Techniques

The inspiration for Umami Luring came from the customized semicircle-shaped tiles made by a local century-old history tile kiln factory. These tiles evoke the image of a "heartwarming pot" and give the building the appearance of a kiln emitting a gentle breeze. The use of natural construction materials and fresh ingredients perfectly complements the concept of "fresh luring," creating a favorable dining atmosphere.

The design team, led by Joye Chuang and Celine Liou, transformed classical elements with modern techniques to achieve a neo-retro aesthetic. The entrance and counter feature a layered visual effect, with the left facade continuing the tile kiln image. Sandy brown hues and frame planks conceal the distributing box, while varnished Italian special paint adds a rusty texture and plays with light and shadow.

The Umami Luring hotpot restaurant spans a total of 251.23 square meters. The first floor features transparent glasses decorated with semicircle-shaped tiles, which not only correspond to the kiln temperature of the hand-made tiles but also block out the chaotic view of the parking lot across the street, creating a sense of privacy. The sunlight reflects off the materials, creating layering light and shadow that adds to the beautiful scenery.

The dining area on the second floor is adorned with fish-shaped bamboo chandeliers, bamboo service trays, and a bamboo screen, creating a natural ambiance. Circular elements such as mirrors and lights enhance the joyful and mellow dining atmosphere. The design team skillfully combined classical elements with modern craftsmanship to achieve various stunning effects.

Overcoming creative and technical challenges, the design team demolished the original staircase structure of the building to increase the space scale and create a smooth flow and spacious comfortable ambiance. A long table, resembling a mini bar, was placed in the middle to divide the left and right sections, while round-edged table tops ensure smooth movement for customers and waiters without collisions.

The Umami Luring hotpot restaurant project started in September 2019 and was completed in December 2019, both in Kaohsiung. The design team's meticulous research and attention to detail resulted in a unique dining experience that seamlessly blends classical and modern elements.

Umami Luring was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award recognizes designs that showcase outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. Umami Luring contributes to quality of life improvements, making the world a better place.
